Student Sponsorships
There is no public education system in Haiti. Eighty percent of Haitian primary education is accomplished by schools run by benevolent organizations. Only with your help can Haitian children escape the plight of their parents – over 50% of the adult population is functionally illiterate.
Haiti Outreach Ministries (HOM) operates primary schools in Cite Soleil, Blanchard and Ibo Beach. The schools offer education from pre-school through sixth grade. Courses include Bible, math, French, English, Creole grammar, history and spelling. The administrators and teachers are Haitian nationals who have completed the appropriate training and education and are committed to the goals of the program. Regular Christian training and love are given to each child. Approximately 1,000 students are enrolled in these three primary schools. COST FOR SPONSORING A PRIMARY STUDENT IS $25/MONTH OR $300/YEAR. (This includes academic instruction, hot lunch and breakfast snack, vitamins, books, classroom materials, uniforms and Christmas and birthday celebrations.)
When these students complete the national sixth grade exam, they are enrolled in area secondary schools under HOM sponsorship. (These students are called "Continuing Education” students) There are well over 125 of these students. At the last HOM board meeting in October 2009, the board approved the addition of a secondary school to the HOM school system, to be built at Blanchard, adding one grade at a time. Construction had begun prior to the earthquake and this new construction was damaged. However, the repair and addition of classrooms will be a priority for HOM, not only for currently enrolled students but also because so many other schools were destroyed in Port au Prince. COST FOR SPONSORING A SECONDARY STUDENT IS $50/MONTH OR $600/YEAR. (This provides for the student’s tuition and other costs and fees.)
June 2004 the first students completed the full HOM primary/secondary program, graduating from 13th grade with baccalaureate degrees and others have followed. A competitive scholarship program is administered by HOM for these students to attend college. Thus far over 35 students are enrolled in this program.
