Overview of Ministry

Pastor Leon and Jacky DorleansHaiti Outreach Ministries (HOM) is a Christian mission to the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  We focus on extremely impoverished areas in and near the capital of Port au Prince, currently serving the communities of Blanchard (Terre Noire), Cite Soleil, Ibo Beach (Source Maielas) and Repatriote.   All U.S. staff are volunteers.  Haitian staff is led by national Pastor Leon Dorleans, who serves as Field Director with assistance from Pastor Luc Aristhene, Assistant Field Director and Jacky Dorleans, HOM School Superintendent.  We are a thrifty, transparent ministry that holds overhead costs to 2% of donations.  All donations to HOM are tax deductible, as we are a 50l(c)3 organization under the rules of the Internal Revenue Service.  All designated donations are applied completely to the area you designate.  For more information on the fiscal health of HOM, click here, to access the Annual Audit.   Donations can be received electronically from this website or donations can be mailed to:  Haiti Outreach Ministries, c/o Ruby Butler, Financial Secretary, 3100 Glenoa Road, Richmond, VA  23223-1506.  All donations will be receipted.

The entire ministry focus has been colored by the Earthquake Disaster of January 2010.  We believe that it is our calling and it is our intention to help in the recovery effort, both in the near term and for the long haul.  For disaster relief and reconstruction information, click here. When the cameras leave and the next world crisis displaces the current outpouring for Haiti, HOM will still be there working with the communities and educating the children.   Ministry takes on many forms:

Evangelism – Four churches have been planted – one in each of the communities listed above – with over 3,000 people worshipping weekly and hundreds involved in Christian education and leadership training.  Sharing the Good News and helping people Prayer circlebuild God-center lives is at the heart of the ministry.  Young people are encouraged to grow into strong Christian leaders for the next generation as they are actively mentored by the current leadership.

Education – Haitian children must rely on schools that are run by NGOs.  HOM primary schools are currently providing Christian School education for approximately 1,000 students. We scholarship students that progress to secondary school after passing the national exam and then further scholarship select students that progress to college, for career training in areas such as teaching, nursing, medical school and Bible/Seminary.  You can read more information about student sponsorship by clicking here

Health Care – Due to the lack of basic sanitation systems and nutritious food, residents of the areas served by HOM are in dire need of health care.  The price for a trip to a doctor’s office or clinic is prohibitive.   HOM has two clinics – one at Blanchard, which is funded and operated by a sister organization, Family Health Ministries and a second clinic at Cite Soleil.  Clinics are staffed by Haitian personnel as well as volunteer medical mission teams.

Vocational Training – Our goal is to instill a Christian work ethic and to model business conduct with integrity, teaching skills that will allow adults to enter the work force at a high level.  HOM offers a secondary level of computer training and repairing skills, sewing/tailoring, craft skills and adult English classes that can fill the market demand.  It is our hope to someday have a co-op gift shop for students to sell their work to visiting mission teams.

Facilities – HOM provides facilities that are essential for the ministry’s work.  This part of the ministry takes on a considerable new emphasis post earthquake.  Many of our building survived the quake due to construction quality.  Many of our building, though still standing, will require demolition or major repairs.  Haitians and visiting teams work along side each other in this effort.

People being fed in the Blanchard compoundNutrition – Our feeding program has been an on-going part of Student Sponsorship but due to a partnership with another organization, StopHunger, we have been able to extend our feeding program through the medical clinics and churches, into the surrounding communities.  This has been a literal life-saver.

Community Projects – To help alleviate the severe poverty in the communities and now total destruction, HOM engages in outreach through house refurbishment and microloans.  Again, this takes on huge, new meaning post-earthquake.

Visiting Groups – HOM encourages groups to travel to Haiti to participate in short-term missions.  For more information on mission trips, click here
